Florals are one of my favorite subjects, especially southern peonies; they remain timeless and elegant. In this piece, soft pink alcohol inks allow a bit of whimsy to unfold and bring about a feeling of joy to any space. I loved creating this work because the delicate grace of petals seems tranquil and almost insists for the viewer to be still in the moment. Painted on tree-free, heavy-weight 144 lb Yupo paper, the flower’s petals and leaves are given varying degrees of transparency as if sunlight is passing through the garden.

I love painting flowers with alcohol ink. The textures that come out take some time to get right but are so interesting and organic. This abstract floral features varying hues of burgundy with accent colors reminiscent of a sunset. I’ve always loved roses; they hold a special place in my heart for sure. My grandfather grew gorgeous rose bushes in his garden and my father continued to cultivate this same garden when we moved in. As luck would have it, my father-in-law is also a rosarian so the passion and drive to keep these beauties going continues. It is no wonder roses have been the center of affection for many pieces of art and literature throughout history. They are timeless, elegant, and can elicit myriad emotions in each person.

Flowers are a constant thrill to paint especially when you can explore different techniques to capture certain angles. The layered undertones make for an ethereal feel as if you were laying in the grass and looking up at the blooms. The patterns were achieved by manipulating the alcohol ink with a paintbrush in one hand while at the same time guiding a heat gun at the ink’s periphery.

Nashville’s Parthenon
This painting was part of an exhibition held by the Centennial Park Conservancy and The Chestnut Group, a local nonprofit organization of Plein-Air painters. I love painting outdoors and throughly enjoyed the chance to join this group in capturing Nashville’s iconic Parthenon. As a full-scale replica of the original Parthenon in Athens, our version currently serves as an art museum but was originally erected in 1897 as part of the Tennessee Centennial Exposition.

The beauty of abstract expression is how no two people will see the same subject. I often hesitate to name my abstract pieces to avoid planting suggestions about what a painting “means.” A painting may be important to me for very different reasons than it is important to you. This piece, however, resonated strongly with me in it’s promise of matriculation from one phase of life to another. You may see something different. That’s one of the reasons I love art so much.
